So I know foreign films are hot. But you don't have to love movies like House of Flying Daggers just because they're critically acclaimed. There are tons of great foreign films out there that don't receive press and probably won't either. So I'm going to have to resort to word of mouth.
Check out Ryuhei Kitamura . He's gotten pretty big in Japan (possibly quite an understatement) and I know he has quite a cult following here, but he really does make movies that just ooze cool. Aragami is awesome, but don't ask me to explain it ,just see it. Nifty dialog and very cool action. On a side note it was part of a Duel between 2 directors to make competing movies following certain guidelines. Single set, cast of 3, story about a duel to the death and only 8 days to film (The other movie is called 2ldk but I have yet to see it). Not that that makes it any cooler but it is an interesting little tid bit.
If you have not seen 2046,
well you really need to. This was critically acclaimed but anyways...Gorgeous movie. In every sense. A good friend of mine thought that if you could bottle the movie it would very much resemble a quality 15 yr scotch. But if you have not seen the movie or do not drink scotch, well you're just never gonna get that. Go see it.
2 very different movies about very different things but really worth seeing.
